In Memory of José Santos
March 5, 1944 - January 25, 2018
José “Joe” Varandas Santos, 73, of Mississauga, Ontario, succumbed to cancer surrounded by his family and loved ones on Thursday, January 25, 2018.
Joe is survived by his son, Nelson C. Santos his wife Karen, his daughter Susy Santos her husband Sergio and his wife Teresa of 50 years; four grandchildren, Chelsea, Nathan, Mathew and Alyssa; his brothers Abel, Jack and Fernando and his sisters Maria, Irene and Inês and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Abel and Ana, brother Domingos, sisters Ana and Rosa.
Joe was born March 5, 1944 in Medeiros da Chã, Trás os Montes, Portugal to Abel and Ana Santos. After 18 years of building and establishing the family land, Joe joined the Army and headed to Africa where he lead a platoon in peace keeping missions for over 3 years. On January 27, 1968 he married Teresa Costa and shortly after both Joe and Teresa headed to Belleville, Canada. Joe was employed as Labor Foreman for Ellis-Don for over 35 years. As one of the leading Foremen in the City of Toronto, Joe was critical in building many major projects in the downtown core - Metro Center, The Chelsea Hotel, Sunnybrook Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, 3 of the 4 TD buildings, and many more. Joe suffered the loss of his arm in December of 1988 due to an accident in the work force. As only Joe’s determination and loyalty could do, he was right back to work 6 months after his accident. He enjoyed working and retired many years after his accident. He was a great wine maker, gardener and loved to watch soccer (Porto FC) and watch hockey (he be-Leafed more than anyone.) Perhaps his most favourite thing to do over his last few years was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to the Canadian Cancer Society to support cancer research and hopefully eradicate cancer.
