As some of you may or may not know, Leona was diagnosed two years ago with lung cancer. This hit our family extremely hard, we were not expecting it at all especially since she quit smoking so many years ago.
Leona was a fighter though, she said it was not her time and she was right. She underwent radiation treatments for the better part of a year and although we got hit with one more problem - her heart - apparently the lung cancer was causing fluid to build around her heart and she would need an operation to correct it - but still, she pushed on.
No matter the willpower and determination she had, the cancer still took a toll on her. She got very tired and was unable to do things for herself after a while. She was eventually cared for 24 hours a day by her daughter. This hurt her more then any cancer could have. Leona loved her indepance. To come and go as she pleased and answer to nobody, so this was a tough pill to swallow.
As time went on her body may have been giving up on her, but her spirit was strong. She loved to laugh, watch her favorite shows, have her treats, visit with her family, chat on the phone, and can't forget her evening scratch bingo for entertainment.
A month ago, Leona was taken into the hospital for pain, we found out that night that she had stage 4 aggressive colon cancer. We had to do surgery immediately.
After a risky surgery we went on a 20-day rollercoaster ride with Leona. One day seemed like she was out of the woods and would be coming home and the next we were being told she suffered a massive heart attack.
On October 9th, 2020, the doctors told us that after many complications that her body had enough and there was nothing more we could do.
Leona died on October 10th, 2020 in the hospital with her family surrounding her, holding her hand, playing her favorite music and sharing stories with her. There was plenty of tears, but she went exactly the way she wanted...
With her loved ones by her side, in no pain at all and asleep.
It was heartbreaking to watch as my grandmother battled her cancer, and to watch her pass.
