As a child, I was lucky enough to have three incredible sets of grandparents. Some of my fondest memories are Christmases and birthdays spent with my Nana and Papa, my mother's step-mother and father. I remember dark, cold winter nights curled in the warmth of their bright living room and the smell of stew and apple cider. I remember the weekend in late September of 2013, far away from home and just barely into my first few weeks of university, when they came to visit. We ate lunch at a little restaurant in downtown Ottawa, and spent time just catching up.
Last year, my Nana got sick.
On August 18, 2018, after an incredibly hard-fought battle with lung cancer, my Nana passed away. With her, she took a little piece of light and kindness from the world. I will never forget her warmth and compassion, nor her genuine love for everyone. She was never my 'step-grandmother'. She was my Nana.
For my birthday this year, if you are able, please consider donating to this memorial fund in lieu of gifts.
Together, we can make sure nobody's Nana is ever taken from them again.
