A Friendship Quilt

A quilt is made up of blocks of shapes, sizes and colours contrasting and complimenting each other just as the fabric of life weaves us into the people we are. Life's threads bind us together in many different ways just as the special people such as my mom, Irene; mother in law Delma and many special friends weave us into the people we are.

My Mom loved to sew! She sewed nearly every day. She also loved family and friends and spent many hours nurturing her relationships with each one of us in her own special way. Sadly, she lost her battle with cancer way too soon and didn't finish all those quilts and friendships.
A month before Mom passed away; she went to a quilt retreat with a special group of women. Like the quilt that she was piecing together she was binding her friendships. Mom was very sick but wanted to go to this retreat to finish a special quilt and be part of her group of friends and like the threads of the quilt bind friendships. Her friends knew that this was important to her so they helped her to cut and start sewing a beautiful quilt. Sadly, her time did not permit her to finish.
Her quilt would remain in a bag unfinished for three years. This same group of ladies was having another quilt retreat in the spring of 2011 and I was invited. With Mom on my shoulder I undertook to finish her quilt. Little did I know that this beautiful quilt which had helped my Mom with her battle with cancer would also help me to heal from the grief I was feeling over losing her? It was a project of love and friendship and many memories.
I am taking part in the Relay for Life Walk with my two beautiful daughters and other wonderful women to raise funds and awareness to help try and eliminate this terrible disease. Cancer has touched our family in many ways but due to research and early detection I am fortunate to still have my husband after his battle with bladder cancer and my Dad, survivor of prostate cancer. Please join me in the fight against cancer and donate to me and my team "Raise your glass" so that others don't have to go through this!
