Tax receipts

Thank you! We’re grateful

First, thank you, for thinking about making a gift to the Canadian Cancer Society. For our donors the most important reason to give is to continue the fight against cancer. At the same time, it’s just good sense to take advantage of tax savings whenever possible. There are lots of rules about when we can and when we can’t issue tax receipts. This pamphlet covers some of the most common situations and questions we receive.

Tax receipt rules

The rules for charitable tax receipts are different depending on who is making the gift, so this pamphlet is divided into three sections:

  • gifts from individuals
  • gifts from groups
  • gifts from businesses

Tax receipts and the government

Every charity that writes tax receipts has to follow rules from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the same arm of government that collects income tax. Each year we need to account for the receipts we issue and the gifts we receive. In addition, we need to keep administration and fundraising expenses as low as possible. The government’s rules for some kinds of gifts are complicated. Donations of materials (also called gifts in kind) are particularly difficult. They can involve appraisals that take administrative time and cost money. In addition, charities are usually required to record gift-in-kind receipts as fundraising expenses, even if no money changes hands. Other gifts, like pools of donations from a group of people, or gifts from a business— donations that seem straightforward — are not always as simple as you would expect.

For more about charities and tax receipts visit the Canada Revenue Agency website for listings of charities and more about rules that charities follow when issuing receipts.
