Our entire family is all part of this crazy 1 day event.
We are riders and crew, we are board members, organizers, we live and breath this event and have since the inception 15 years ago.
Why, because we care and because the diagnosis of Cancer scares the crap out of us.
So what do we do, we do something big and crazy to make a difference.
Research changes, almost in a blink of an eye. How many people we’ve met, who if diagnosed 5 years ago, would not be here, but today, they are living and enjoying life.
We have the impact to be part of that. With so many types of Cancers, so many stages of each one, the list is long, so we put our donation dollars where we feel they are most needed. We know that many cancers have poor outcomes, partly because the donation dollars just aren’t there.
For the 15th year, we are doing it again.
- Training starts in March and goes till June, that means, training starts with a 40k ride and builds to a 200k ride, plus getting the vehicles, trailers, spare wheels, food, water, tents, is planned and organized every 2 weeks.
- Food planning and organizing (Kelsy and Cindy, starts in May)
- Insurance needs to be approved for every City and town we ride thru (Kelsy)
- Fundraising events, like Bridges brunch (vicki) and the pole sits (Ryan for organizing it and for Kerry and Ryan and Julio for spending 50hr in the air on a lift), plus ALL our family who shake the donation jugs on the ground and count the money raised…Loonies and Toonies can add up to $20,000.
- Raffle Tickets - organizing them, selling them, and tracking them all (Aimee and Evan)
- Organizing the logistics for ride day - Vicki, Kerry and Katie
So not only did this event start with us just riding our bikes, but it has grown to be an amazing and well run all volunteer event that it is today.
Not a penny of the donation money is ever used for admin costs, event costs, advertising, or ride day cost of any type. 100% is designated to cancer research
Ride Day is June 22, and we will all be there again this year.
Kerry on his bike for the 15th time, that’s 6000km and 195,000 feet (that’s just every years ride day for 14 years and it doesn’t include the yearly training miles or time)
Vicki will be in the front pilot car, looking backwards out of the sunroof, coaching and encouraging 150+ riders for 20 hours (yes, she rode her bike for 10 years too)
Kelsy who will be in the front Pilot car helping managing the police radios, and all that is happening in there. (Kelsy rode 4 years and has be part of the SAG team drivers for many years too)
Ryan will be off his bike this year, and working on the water team (yes, filling 200 water bottles in 10 mins or less for every rider) and they do that 12x
Julio and Katie manage the gear truck for all the rider bags, they will load and unload 150 bags (weighing anywhere from 15-30 pounds) They will do this 14x
Aimee and Evan will managing the raffle tickets back in Delta (for the big draw the night we come in) This will be the 2nd year they aren’t with us on the road, but grand baby Renée is not old enough yet to join us and a new baby in May 2019 is due.
Cindy, Randy and Anjolie will be our crew chiefs, managing the food and all the ride day stops (that’s 11 full food stops, hot and cold food) It the best food on any ride from what we've heard.
Yes, we are engaged and working our ‘asses’ off, starting at 2am for breakfast and finishing by 12am, the same day. What a day... Rain or shine, wind or no wind... we'll all be there doing our part to make it happen.
