Shape the debate

What action is needed?

Asking questions is an important part of the electoral process. It forces political parties, their leaders and local candidates, to publicly provide solutions to the problems Canadians face. Furthermore, political parties take notice of the questions that are asked during an election campaign. A frequently repeated question will encourage a party to address an issue that they might have otherwise avoided.

How can I help shape the debate?

  • Have a question ready to ask candidates when they come to your door or at local events.
  • Ask a question at a candidate debate in your community.

What questions should I ask?

Sample question about caregiver support

  1. Many Canadians provide health care to seriously ill or ageing loved ones. This often results in an increased financial burden due to lost income and unforeseen expenses such as, transportation, medical equipment and supplies, pharmaceuticals, etc. If you are elected, what will you do to help caregivers?

Sample questions about the environmental and health

  1. What will your party do to ensure Canadians are better informed of the chronic health hazards associated with some products on the Canadian market?
  2. If you are elected, what will you do to reduce our environmental exposure to cancer-causing substances?

Sample question about tobacco contraband

  1. Illegal cigarette contraband is a huge problem in terms of crime and public health. Cheap cigarettes encourage smoking.  If elected, will you take action to ensure that cigarette contraband is brought under control?
