Who are Breast Friends?

The Breast Friends Dragon Boat Racing Team was formed in 1998 so that those in Edmonton and the surrounding area, with a diagnosis of breast cancer could participate in the world-wide survivor dragon boat movement. Team members range in age from mid 30s to mid 70s. Some have faced cancer more than once. We train together approximately 8 months of the year, both in the gym and on the North Saskatchewan river.

Each season, Breast Friends race against other women’s teams and in particular against other breast cancer survivor teams across Canada- our peers and sisters. In addition Breast Friends crews have been to international survivor festivals in Australia, Vancouver, Peterborough (Ontario), Sarasota (Florida), Florence (Italy), and in 2023, New Zealand.

Flower Ceremony
At every dragon boat festival where survivor teams participate, a Pink Ribbon Challenge race is followed by a Flower Ceremony as a way to remember those who have received a diagnosis of breast cancer as well as those who have lost their lives to breast cancer.
