The Support Squad

We have come together as a team to support Cheryl and the estimated 27,700 women and 260 men diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Canada.

We are participating and fundraising for this year’s Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday, October 1, 2023, because we believe better treatment options and survival outcomes are possible. And we want to support all Canadians impacted by breast cancer, including our family and friends.

On February 20, 2020,  Cheryl was diagnosed with breast cancer and a plan of action was put into place. On March 3, 2020 she had a right side mastectomy and then patiently waited for everything to be healed to start chemotherapy. On April 17th she received her 1st chemo treatment. Because of covid chemo was scheduled every 3 weeks instead of every 2nd week..after the 2nd treatment her hair was falling out in clumps so she shaved my head!   Next she had to go and have a picc line inserted to make it easier on her veins. After a couple days of pain at the site of the picc line, an ultrasound was scheduled to find out there was a blood clot which can be a side effect of the line. The blood clot resulted in 6 months of blood thinner injections every day in the stomach. After 3 months of chemo they changed her cocktail which then meant a trip once a week for 12 weeks to Saskatoon. This was at the height of the covid epidemic. When going for treatments she always had to go alone, Stan waited the entire time out in the car. Not a lot was open so they went straight to the cancer clinic and straight home...lunch was whatever they had packed to be eaten along the way on the way home.  September 10th 2020 was the last day of chemo!. On October 8th, 2020 she had to go to Saskatoon for a CT tattoo scan to begin radiation. On Oct 20th she started radiation which would be 25 treatments that would go for 5 weeks from Monday to Friday. She and Stan stayed at the Cancer patient lodge during radiation treatments.  On November 23rd she finally got to ring the bell!!...yay treatment was done!! Next step was to remove her ovaries to get rid of the production of estrogen (which she tested receptor positive for) and start hormone therapy which she will be on for 10 years. She also has to have 6 infusions of Zometa to help keep her bones in good condition. To date, she has 1 left for Sept.

"I am so thankful for FB messenger as that was my company through all my treatments. I am also so thankful for those that helped me emotionally, spiritually and physically through that time of my life. When I think back to that journey I was on it was a constant time of blood work, ECG scans, ultrasounds, picc line maintenance, needles, chemo, radiation, phone calls and consultations, MRI's, surgerys and many trips to Saskatoon. Believe me when I say the Cancer journey is real...."

So this is why we Run. In hopes that research and earlier detection can reduce the number of people who receive this diagnosis and have to go through this process.

With your help, we can reach our fundraising goal and fund groundbreaking breast cancer research and support programs and services for those impacted by this disease. Together, we can create a future without breast cancer.

Please donate today. Help us give Canadians impacted by breast cancer a reason to have hope.

Thank you! We appreciate your generous support.

P.S. Did you know? A $75 donation can fund a clinical trial for someone with breast cancer to test new treatments to save lives and give hope to countless others.
