Laura's Angels

20 years ago, on Sunday, October 3rd, 2004, the morning of Run For the Cure, Laura Horton, my beautiful Mom, passed away from breast cancer. She was 51. They estimate her cancer started when she was about 42, and was diagnosed at 45.

She always refused to let people say she "lost her battle" with cancer. She fought hard and loved life so much. Her legacy was simply the love she had for people and the world, and all its beauty. She always looked for the silver lining.

Laura worked at the University of Victoria until the time of her passing, and her ashes are spread under the memorial tree that was planted at Finnerty Gardens at UVic, where she walked every day. Today, the path of Run for the Cure in Victoria travels right past her tree.

This year marks 20 years since we lost Laura, and one year ago, we also lost my incredible Aunt Betty to cancer as well. No one is immune from the extraordinary fear and loss that cancer can bring to life, and it never, ever gets easier. But there is always hope. Treatments and recovery have come so far, and there is so much more we can do with some help.

This year, please consider donating to our Team, Laura's Angels. Or, donate to a cause that pulls on your heartstrings as much as this one does on mine. But more important? Go take your Momma out for ice cream. Give her giant hugs. Connect with your people, those who make your heart sing, and those who can help you see the silver linings in life. I'm so glad my Mom, Laura, was in my life for 21 years, and we continue to miss her every single day.
