Tour de Rock 2022

Chris Van Swieten

Hello, my name is Chris, I have been a police officer with the Victoria Police Department for five years, and I am riding in the 25th anniversary Tour de Rock!

The money raised from this event helps fund leading-edge pediatric cancer research that is improving cancer treatments, preventing cancer and saving lives; provides reliable and up-to-date information on cancer, risk reduction and treatment; offers vital community-based support services for people living with cancer and their families; and advocate for healthy public policies.

I am riding in the tour because hearing the stories of the children battling cancer with bravery and optimism has inspired me to do what I can to support them and their families in their fight. I was born and raised on Vancouver Island and remembered when the first tour came to Wishart Elementary School when I was in 2nd grade!

So far the training has been intense, but it has been rewarding seeing the progress we are making as a team. The highlight for me so far was sitting at the front of the Tour de Rock team announcement in the gymnasium of Tillicum Elementary. I remember when I was in second grade watching a Tour de Rock rider and our music teacher shave their head in front of the entire school. It was a surreal moment being on the other side of that and looking out at all the children cheering for us.

It is an honour to ride for the kids, and I look forward to supporting these families affected by pediatric cancer however I can.

Thanks for your support!
