Shaving my head for Father's Day: June 16, 2019.
Update by Madeline Holden on Sunday, June 16, 2019: Father's Day
On Family Day (Feb 18, 2019), my favourite person in the world was diagnosed with terminal, pancreatic cancer: my dad, Brendan Holden.
This father's day, I gifted my dad something different: Inspired by the "Colour To Conquer" and "Shave for the Brave" campaigns, I decided to colour half my hair and shave the other half to raise money for pancreatic cancer research.
My original goal was to raise $1000 CAD in 4 weeks. Together we raised almost $5000 CAD and as I type this, donations are still coming in!!** I am in awe and profoundly touched by the outpouring of generosity from friends, family, colleagues and strangers. Without each of your donations, this endeavor would have failed.
My lovely friend and colleague, professional hairstylist, Jessica Klepacki donated her expert talent skillfully guiding my dad as he shaved my head! She designed, styled, cut and dyed the rest of my hair: purple for pancreatic cancer and red as a tribute to my dad's previously red hair and beard. Thank you so, so much Jessica!
While this money will not cure my dad, your kindness and generosity has raised his spirits significantly. It has brought him so much joy to know that so many people care about him and about finding a cure for cancer. Thank you doesn't even begin to describe how grateful we are. Merci beaucoup. Vinaka vaka levu. Terima kasih. Matur nuwun. Çok tesekkürler!
As for my new hair-do: it is way out of my comfort zone, but it's funky, cool and I absolutely love it! And as I look in the mirror, I smile and think of my dad: Happy Father's Day Papa, I will always love you.
**Proceeds from this fundraiser go directly to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Home Stretch: last week....
I started on May 19, 2019 and my original goal was to raise $1000 in 4 weeks. Not having any fundraising experience I thought $1000 was a bit lofty and ambitious. You, have all proved me horribly wrong: here we are with one week left and we've raised $3990! I am absolutely blown away by the outpouring of generosity by family, friends, acquaintances, co-workers and strangers across the globe. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! With only one week left I decided to increased the goal to $5000. Why? Because we have one week left so why not?!?! But also because all donations above and beyond the goal get redirected to other programs within the Canadian Cancer Society where there is the most need, while all donations up to and including the goal go to the area that is closest to my heart: pancreatic cancer research and programs.

Finding Joy When You're Scared: and I AM scared.
I went to Chemo with my dad last week. My mom goes every week with him but this week was my turn. I was scared; I didn't want to see my dad hooked up and being fed drugs because somehow it would make this cancer real in a way I didn't think I could handle. And yet it was a gentle and relaxing experience. We talked and he showed me his sudoku and we read and talked about my dreams for the future. It was joy filled. And then I went home and cried my heart out because he won't be there when my dreams become a reality. I don't know how my mom does this every week. She has an unfathomable strength which I admire. The next day my brother and I took my mom and dad out for a quiet supper to celebrate their 44th wedding anniversary. It was a lovely evening. No fancy restaurant. No big party or gifts. Just laughs and smiles and each other. Celebrating my mom and dad together. It was another joy filled moment. Finding joy when I'm scared is the only way I know how to get through....

Week 3 of 4: Global village
This is truly an international, collaborative, endeavor: support in the form of donations, thoughts and prayers are coming in from as far away as Newfoundland; Nova Scotia; Alberta; the USA, the UK and even Fiji and Indonesia!! This is a reflection of my dad and the wonderful global village and community with which he has surrounded himself. It's the beginning of week 3 and not only have we reached our $1000 and $2000 goals, we are now at 77% of our $3000 goal!! So grateful!! Thank you!!

What is the point?
Cancer can be so isolating. I know that shaving/coloring my hair and raising money won't cure my dad but I needed to do something. And something amazing has resulted that I didn't expect: the sense of isolation has all but disappeared. My dad's spirit, my mom's spirit, my brother's, sister's and my spirits have all been lifted and THAT is the point. Thank you for that gift. Thank you for participating in this fundraiser - giving us hope. Your generous donations have brought us to 99% of our of $2000 goal!! Since we still have 2.5 weeks left we decided to increase the goal to $3000 to encourage those who have not yet donated. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Week 2 of 4 and still going strong!
The beginning of week 2 of this 4 week fundraiser and we are already at 83% of our new $2000 goal. My brother commented on how encouraging it is to see, not one, but thirty-one different individuals and families contributing. It is a community effort - strangers included - coming together to support us. Knowing we are not alone in this difficult time is the greatest gift. For that, our family is so incredibly blessed. Thank you.
