ZePawn13's Kidney Cancer Awareness With Canadian Cancer Society
Hey! My name is Zach and this month I would like to spread awareness of Kidney Cancer! This year has been a whirlwind of emotions, ups, and downs...a bit of it all. The tip of the iceberg for my year was in October when it was confirmed my "cyst" in my kidney would turn out to be a cancerous tumor. The way my Dr. had found it was pure luck! Here is how I found out.
Back in December, I had gotten a pretty bad flu-like sickness. It turned out to be pneumonia and that kicked my butt. A month after I felt like my insides were still being affected by this pneumonia and I was sore. This had me concerned enough to go to my Dr. and ask if we could check it out. He sends me to an Ultrasound. They do a full check of everything in my liver area including the stomach... A week later I received a call. It's my Dr's secretary telling me about an appointment I have in 20 MINUTES for a CT Scan. I panicked and rushed and proceeded with the testing. I start to kind of see red flags already... Why would I need a CT scan so fast after just a routine Ultrasound? I try not to worry about it and try to not let my mind race on it. A few weeks pass and I have another appointment but this time it's with a Urologist Specialist and we begin to talk about testing. He was super informative and told me exactly what they had seen. It was a cyst that was 1.4cm that was already in stage 3. Stage 3 meaning it was a 50/50 if it was a cyst or a tumor... I begin to worry some more about this just expecting the worst-case scenario so it doesn't hurt so bad to hear the bad news. We schedule an MRI and a Biopsy. MRI came back and the cyst had now grown to 2.0cm which again is alarming with it growing .6 CM over about 6 months between tests. My biopsy came back around 2 weeks after my testing. My specialist called with the bad news and confirmed that I have indeed cancer in my kidney... I am now in the process of waiting for a plan and action with a new specialist in my province. This is where my story continues...
Now, this brings me to my message of Kidney Cancer Awareness and all other forms of cancer. My finding was completely pure luck. If I had not gotten the random ultrasound for my insides hurting I may have never found this tumor growing. Who knows when I would've found out and in 5 years or so could it all been too late for me? Would cancer spread throughout my body by the time we found it? My existing lymph nodes in my lungs could have caused even bigger issues and resulting in a much more difficult scenario and way harder to treat. This spread of awareness is so important to me because I was too someone who thought I would never get it. Especially in my mid 20's!? Young naive Zach would've never thought of this to be true. Cancer does strike anyone. Doesn't matter the age or how healthy you are cancer will attack and develop but, all we can do to stop it is research more and find it early!!!!
My story is just one small one of millions who suffer from cancer. Start the fight now and continue so together we can build a better future for our next generations to come. Find the signs early! Don't be afraid to ask your doctor!!!
