Let's CRUSH Cancer!
I am a Cancer Fighter. Like many people my personal experience with cancer has touched the lives of so many. Cancer not only affects the one diagnosed but also their family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.
I was first diagnosed with cancer in September 2008, Melanoma (skin cancer). I remember going to the Dr. with our 7-month-old and the Dr saying, “I think we should biopsy this spot.” Thinking nothing of it until the day everything changed. It was the Friday before Labor Day when the phone call came saying “You have cancer!” I remember calling my parents to come over and watch our 21-month-old and 7-month-old while my husband and I went through what felt like every worst case possible. I went through two surgeries and a reconstruction. Thankfully, we caught it very early!
Fast forward to November 2014, I went for a routine ultrasound on my Thyroid and they found a few nodules. Off I go for a fine needle biopsy, results inconclusive. Knowing my history my Dr. said, “We should get a second opinion.” Second opinion AKA specialist here we come. He looked at my husband and I and said, “Your Thyroid is coming out, too many unknowns!” Thinking well I guess we better be safe. Surgery was scheduled, and following surgery came the waiting and more waiting. I waited 4 weeks; never did it take this long. I called the Dr office regularly asking if results were in and nothing until the Saturday, 2 weeks before Christmas. While shopping at Costco I got the call. “Hi Stephanie, hope I got you at an ok time. I know you have been waiting for results and we just received them, and I wanted to call you right away. It came back as cancer; you have 5 cancerous tumors!” I left the half-filled shopping cart in the middle of an isle, told a Costco worker I had to leave and was unable to put item’s back. I got in the car and called my husband crying saying you’re not going to believe this. The good thing was my Thyroid was already gone; the bad news was I had 5 cancerous tumors which meant I needed treatment. That following week my husband and I met with the Dr’s and the road to cancer free started.
Fast forward to 2021 and I am a happy and healthy 45-year-old Wife, Mom to our now 15-year-old son and 14-year old daughter. I’m a Sister, Aunt, Niece, Daughter and Grand Daughter and BEST of all I AM 5 years CANCER FREE!
I am taking action to change the future of this disease for my friends, family, and Canadians nationwide. I am raising awareness and funds for the fight against cancer. I hope you can support us and our goal. The money raised will help Canada’s brightest researchers make groundbreaking discoveries, provide cancer patients with much-needed support services, and ensure that other life-changing work is possible.
