Meagan Gets Wiggy
In 2014, on a bit of a whim, I started a cancer fundraiser in support of cutting off about 17" of hair. At the time, cancer was a word that felt very distant from me -- i hadn't lived with it, and no one in my immediate life was dealing with it. My hair fundraiser just seemed like a productive thing to do when I was thinking of cutting my hair off anyways -- and at that time, raised almost $800!
As many of you know, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer almost two years ago. Thankfully, it was easily treatable with surgery, and other than taking a daily dose of Synthroid to support necessary metabolism hormones (and other things, thyroids are important!), I have been able to live a completely regular life. This is quite amazing to think about, as almost 1 in every 2 Canadians is diagnosed with a cancer in their lifetime.
Many people supported me during that rough patch, and continue to check in and support me now. I would like to pay some of that kindness forward, so I am hosting a fundraiser in two parts: for my part, I will be cutting off my hair to donate, and I am also hosting this online fundraiser for anyone who wishes to participate.
Within Canada, the only location accepting donations of hair is Wigs for Kids. They accept hair that has not been chemically treated and is at least 12" long, combining it with up to 40 other ponytails to create one wig at a time for children with cancer. I have patiently waited until after our wedding to cut off at least 18-20" off (my hair is currently about 27" long)! I am proud to support a child in this way.
The cash fundraiser that is a part of this page will contribute towards endocrine cancer reseaarch and support, which includes thyroid cancer. I of course totally understand that with world events and changing personal circumstances, not everyone can or will donate, and that is okay! I appreciate you sharing this with anyone you think might be interested!
I am keeping this fundraiser open until October 14, 2021 with a goal of raising $500. This is the two year anniversary of my diagnosis date. I also will be partnering with my school in September/October as they participate in the Terry Fox fundraiser -- we might cut my hair off at school! Follow along with #meagangetswiggy for updates and a haircut date!
Thank you to everyone who has already and continues to support me! You have made a difference whether you donate or not!

Proceeds from my fundraiser will support Endocrine cancer research (includes pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal cancer)
