Paul's 31st birthday cancer fundraiser
This year, for my 31st birthday I’ll be raising money to get my haircut- but actually, to help the fight against cancer. I made this decision near the beginning of the pandemic, but it was made all the more personal this year with the loss of my father.
Cancer wasn’t the final blow, but it was probably the heaviest blow to my dad’s health in the last years of his life as non-hodgkin's lymphoma and chemotherapy resulted in his transplanted kidney ceasing to function properly.
Fuck cancer, plain and simple. It transforms the lives of those affected by it, and those around them. The fundraiser will be through the Canadian Cancer Society, and I’ll be doing a mail-in hair donation to Wigs for Kids BC. The money is not going to any specific type of cancer research, but I instead chose the Cancer Society’s option of: “where it’s needed most.”
Part of my reasoning for this is that my tough bastard pops survived Non-hodgkins lymphoma, prostate cancer, and multiple bouts of skin cancer in his final years. Hard to pick one.
My goal is $1000, and I’ll be putting in $100. Do I know enough people who are willing (and in a comfortable enough financial position) to chip in to help cover the rest? I hope so, but anything we raise is more than nothing and I'm humbled by the kindness of anyone who's willing to join in this effort.
I still need to sort out a hairdresser and exact date/time, but I’m aiming to have the haircut itself and mail-in donation around September 15th, with before/after photos on the Facebook if not a livestream of the long hair being cut.
Proceeds from my fundraiser will support Where the need is greatest
