Somcan's Fundraising Page
We are excited to be hosting the 4th Annual Somcan Foundation Golf Tournament on September 8th, 2022, at Whitevale Golf Club in Pickering.
This year we are partnering with the Longest Day of Golf Fundraiser which was started by two members - Joan and Bob Store - when their 7-year-old grandson Jeffrey was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 1991. The Canadian Cancer Society (Durham Community Office) provided tremendous support and assistance to Jeffrey and his family. The first Longest Day of Golf fundraiser was held in 1992 and since that time it has raised over $450,000!
Funds from the Longest Day of Golf and the Somcan Tournament will support pediatric cancer research, specifically a grant funding Sheila Singh and her team at McMaster University.
Brain tumors represent the leading cause of childhood cancer mortality, due to their highly aggressive and often incurable nature. Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor. The research project is called "Deciphering the metabolic rewiring of myc‑amplified medulloblastoma” will help uncover cancer‑specific vulnerabilities that they can attack with therapeutic interventions.
About The Somcan Foundation
The Somcan Foundation was launched in 2014 through our travels and partnerships, The Somcan Group wanted to establish a not-for-profit foundation that would be able to give back to individuals and communities that are in need. We are unable to issue tax receipts for donations, as our recipients are not the high-profile charities that you hear about, but rather those that are smaller in nature, but just as deserving of a helping hand.
