Welcome to the Lucas Murnaghan Paddle-Out
Lucas Murnaghan was an incredible human being. He was always smiling at the small precious moments in life that count for something bigger than ourselves. He lived a life surrounded by loved ones, while encouraging others to chase their dreams and to never be afraid to stand up for love. Lucas’s life is one that will never be forgotten and we are all honoured to have known him and all of his kindness. This is our chance to continue honouring him in one of the most unique and traditional ways known to surfing communities all over the world.
What: A “paddle-out” is a traditional Hawaiian tribute that celebrates and honours the life of someone who has passed away. The paddle-out is a floating memorial held in the ocean, a few yards from the shore, where surfers and other water sports participants gather in a large circle joining hands on the water craft of their choosing. For this event, due to COVID-19 protocols, participants will be asked to paddle out into a large circle but restrict hand holding in order to maintain social distancing measures. Honorary words will be spoken and flowers will be tossed into the middle of the circle to pay final respects. It is encouraged that participants bring a real flower to the ceremony to toss. A moment of silence will be followed to honour the life of Lucas Murnaghan. Prior to the paddle-out a beach clean up hosted by A Greener Future will take place at 9am.
Where: We will launch off the shore of the Scaraborough Bluffs (mini mavs), and paddle out a few yards into Lake Ontario. 1 Brimley Rd S.
When: Sunday September 12th 9am - 12pm
How Much: $5 donation fee is encouraged but not mandatory to attend, as money raised will go to Liver Cancer research with the Canadian Cancer Society.
Event Capacity: 100 paddlers max. Participants are also welcomed to stand on the shoreline to celebrate if they do not wish to enter the water.
COVID-19 Protocols: To maintain and comply with health and safety measures implemented by the Government of Ontario, a social distancing measure of 2 meters is recommended between participants at all times. When 2 meters cannot be maintained masks must be worn. When the paddle out begins and a human circle is created, holding hands is strictly not-permitted unless you are sitting beside family members.
