Whitevale Golf Club - Longest Day of Golf 2022

Where it all started

The Longest Day of Golf fundraiser at Whitevale Golf Club in Pickering was started by two members - Joan and Bob Store - when their 7-year-old grandson Jeffrey was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 1991. The Canadian Cancer Society (Durham Community Office) provided tremendous support and assistance to Jeffrey and his family.

The first Longest Day of Golf Fundraisr was held in 1992 and since that time, this event has raised over $450,000.

Exciting plans for 2022!

This year we are excited to announce that our fundraiser has grown into two parts! We are incredibly grateful to The Somcan Foundation for supporting us this year as part of the fundraiser!

Part One is the original Longest Day of Golf where on Friday, June 24, 2022, a dedicated foursome will tee off at dawn and will play round after round of golf finishing at twilight. Members playing throughout the day will step aside to allow the foursome to play through whilst cheering them on.

Part Two is a golf tournament run by The Somcan Foundation to be held at Whitevale Golf Club on Thursday, September 8, 2022, with all funds raised also going to Whitevale's Longest Day of Golf!  Please use the link below to register for this event and to see sponsorship opportunities.

A little bit about what we are funding

Brain tumors represent the leading cause of childhood cancer mortality, due to their highly aggressive and often incurable nature. Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor, which dozens of  Canadians are diagnosed with each year. Whereas the fine‑tuning of multimodal therapies has significantly improved the survivorship of MB, there are still fundamental gaps in our molecular understanding of MB recurrence, which remains a terminal diagnosis.

All funds raised from both golf tournaments will support a Canadian Cancer Society pediatric research grant. The grant is funding Sheila Singh and her team at McMaster University with her research project "Deciphering the metabolic rewiring of myc‑amplified medulloblastoma"

Their preliminary findings have shown that MB tumor cells have altered cellular metabolism in comparison to normal brain tissues. The goal of their work is to understand how alterations in cellular metabolism allow recurrent MB tumour cells to initiate and sustain disease burden. In doing so, they hope to uncover cancer‑specific vulnerabilities that they can attack with therapeutic interventions.
