Haley's Virtual Boston Marathon for Prostate Cancer
On Sept 7, I am planning on running a Virtual Boston Marathon from Corunna to Bright's Grove as a fundraiser for Prostate Cancer.
I began my running journey in 2013. It seemed like a farfetched dream at the time, but one day, I wanted to qualify and run the Boston Marathon with my dad - my 10x Ironman and 89-marathon finisher dad.
Fast forward five years (and five marathons) later: on October 7, 2018 - my Dad's 60th birthday - we ran the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. It was a beautiful fall day. We both ran like the wind and crossed the finish line as Boston Marathon Qualifiers - we were going to the Boston Marathon together on April 20, 2020!!! It was a wonderful birthday party.
Three weeks later, on Nov 1, 2018, my dad went in for a routine physical; his PSA came back at 152, fifty times higher than a normal result. After several days of further poking and prodding, he was diagnosed with Stage IV-A Metastatic Prostate Cancer and immediately began chemotherapy. He'd experienced no symptoms. At this point, there are several life-prolonging treatments for this type of cancer, but ultimately it is a terminal illness with a 50% 5-year survival rate.
The Boston Marathon in April 2020 has turned into a virtual race, and even though we can't cross the finish line in Boston like we originally planned, we are going to bring the Boston Marathon to Bright's Grove!
I will be running the Virtual Boston Marathon on ~Sept 7, 2020 and my dad will be joining me on his bike. We're going to run from Corunna, through Sarnia, and out to Bright's Grove as a celebration of our journey and a fundraiser for prostate cancer in hopes that one day, his diagnosis will not be life-ending.
Now that we've surpassed my original goal of $2020, my fundraising goal is $20,201.07!
See you out there!
Proceeds from my fundraiser will support Prostate cancer
