Cancer: It is something that most people know as a disease one can be diagnosed with. But it is not until you know someone who has been impacted by it that you start to truly gain an understanding as to what cancer does, not just what it is. Cancer not only negatively impacts an individual's overall health, but it also impacts the people who know and love that person.

I have known a couple of people in my life that have been impacted by cancer. I knew it was detrimental and sometimes uncontrollable, but I did not realize there were things I could do to help people going through the impacts of cancer – this was until I met Ryann Collins. Upon starting my first year at university, Ryann explained that in May of 2023, she was unfortunately diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Ryann also educated me on the impacts of cancer and the importance of fighting for a cure as it impacts so many people around us. As Ryann said, “You never know who it will be. It could be someone sitting in your dorm, someone at your dinner table, a friend, a parent, a brother or sister”.

This is why I am joining Ryann’s team for Relay for Life. I am joining to raise money, bring awareness to cancer and fight for a cure. It may feel as though it is impossible to act and help, but that is not the case; by donating and fundraising you are investing in the life of someone who matters. Any donation, whether it is big or small, can make a difference. However, it is understandable that times can be tough financially, so if you can not donate, I still encourage you to read Ryann's story (by clicking on the blue highlighted team name 'RyannCollins') as it is truly impactful.
