Cancer affects all of us. In some way or another, everyone will be touched by cancer in their life, whether it's through a family member, friend, or even personally. Cancer research is a cause that is extremely close to my heart. I have always grown up knowing about cancer because my dad is a doctor who is trying to cure it. Recently, it has become something much more for me. About three years ago I suddenly lost a beloved great-aunt to cancer. She was perfectly healthy, and then she was sick, and then she was gone. A few years ago, I lost a classmate and former teacher to cancer, as well as some family friends. After they passed, I decided I wanted to help with Relay for Life in a more meaningful way beyond just participating. I applied to be part of the planning committee again this year in honor of those I have lost and for people like my dad who are trying to cure this terrible disease. Participating in Relay for Life at my school for the past three years showed me that I want to become a pediatric oncologist. I want to be a pediatric oncologist so I can be a part of the fight against cancer in a bigger way.

I relay for all the people who have passed from or are fighting cancer and their families who are affected greatly by this. I relay for all the doctors who have dedicated their lives to eradicating this affliction. Mostly, I relay for my family who is still grieving the loss of my great-aunt and our family friends and for I am fighting everyday for those who are still suffering.
