Through the loss of a loved one to cancer, I’m more determined than ever to help change the future of this disease. My uncle Sang passed away last June, just three months after being diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma. Experiencing this grief as a family, I am committed to fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society to support cancer researchers across Canada.

The Canadian Cancer Society, founded in 1947, has raised over $2 million for cancer research. One notable recipient of their funding is Dr. David Malkin. In 1990, Dr. Malkin published a seminal study identifying an inherited mutation in the TP53 gene as the cause of Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), a genetic condition that significantly increases cancer risk. Since then, he has led groundbreaking research in the TP53 field, developing testing and surveillance protocols to help those with TP53 mutations live longer, fuller lives.

With support from the Canadian Cancer Society, Dr. Malkin developed the “Toronto protocol,” a treatment plan to closely monitor individuals with LFS and detect tumors earlier. This approach increased survival rates after a cancer diagnosis from 60% to 89%. Today, the protocol is used worldwide, significantly reducing mortality and improving the quality of life for children and adults with LFS.
