My first Relay For Life was June of 2008, when a group of us from Jamieson Laboratories Ltd., joined together to participate in the Relay For Life on behalf of our co-worker Gary Charlton who had participated for years. Once I joined, I understood exactly how he felt, and how important it was to continue raising funds each year.
I have since moved onto the team, “Camperettes Crusading Against Cancer.” Everyone on our team has their own reasons for participating in the, Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, but we all agree that we need to raise funds for a cure, and to help those in our communities with treatments and support.
Many schools in our area are now holding their own Relay for Life events, and therefore, there are not enough teams to hold a major event in Windsor. As a result, our team will hold our own Relay for Life Event in South Windsor on Saturday, June 8, 2024.
We all have family members, friends, or co-workers who have, or have had cancer, and always wish we could do more to help them. I participate in Relay for Life each year, because it is more than just a fundraiser. This is a nationwide event that brings people together to raise funds that are used to support some of the most promising cancer research and vital support services for people living with cancer. It’s a chance to celebrate those, who with early detection have survived, to support those who have recently been diagnosed and are going for treatments, to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer, and to renew our efforts to save lives and spare heartbreak, by hopefully one day, reaching a future without this devastating disease.
Is there hope? I only have to look to some of my family members and friends who have survived, and especially to my friend Shirley who was given 4 months to live and held a, “Celebration of Life”, October 2022, to see all her family and friends together one last time. It was a wonderful event, with lots of laughter and good stories. She does have her good and bad days, but she has kept her sense of humour and never gives up.
Each year it is a special moment lighting our luminaries at dusk, and walking through the many lights representing all the people we celebrate, support and remember. Even though it is not as big as the normal events, it still gets me every time. Please let me know if you would like to have a luminary lit for someone.
Last year our team raised $7,061.20, beating our previous year’s goal. This year we hope to do even better.
Thank you again to everyone who donated last year and I hope you will help me to reach my fundraising goal of $800.00 this year. Please use the link below that directs you to my personal page to donate. Cheque donations can be made payable to, “Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life.”
