About “Jane’s Journey for MBC (Metastatic Breast Cancer)”
My journey began in 2009, when at 34 years old, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The diagnosis obviously came as a complete shock as I was young, living a healthy lifestyle, and had no history of cancer in my family. My medical team worked quickly, and I was able to immediately begin my surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal therapies. Once all was through – I was cured! Or so I thought…
In 2018, close to 10 years after my initial diagnosis, I was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer. Now almost three years since my metastatic diagnosis, I am again honoured to participate in the Run with my family, now from a different perspective as someone with metastatic disease. Since my metastatic diagnosis, my Team is now called "Jane's Journey for MBC (Metastatic Breast Cancer)”, and is proud to continue to participate and fundraise, knowing that our funds are going specifically towards metastatic breast cancer research, an area that is so urgently needing support.
This year we are participating in the Burlington/Hamilton/Oakville Run site. Over the years, we have also participated in the Toronto and Mississauga Run sites. In 2010 (while undergoing treatment), and in 2011, I proudly led as a volunteer Run Director for the Mississauga CIBC Run for the Cure site, where over the two years, over $1 million dollars was raised for the cause. I was so incredibly grateful and honoured to be awarded the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Erin McBride Leadership Award for my roles as a volunteer.
In my heart, I love to give back, help others, and help to create a future without breast cancer. This year, I am asking for your help to support me in facing this horrible disease.
On October 3rd, 2021, I will be participating with the goal of raising awareness of metastatic breast cancer. Team “Jane’s Journey for MBC” will walk together, unified with the hope that the money raised for MBC research will lead to more effective treatments, and maybe even a cure. We will honour those that have lost their lives, and all of those still currently living with the disease.
Please consider donating, or even joining team Jane’s Journey for MBC, so that together we can work towards creating a future without breast cancer.
Thank you in advance for your kindness and support.
About MBC (Metastatic Breast Cancer):
Breast cancer becomes fatal as the cancer travels beyond the breast and lymph nodes to vital organs such as the liver, lungs, brain, bones and other locations. Researchers still do not understand why breast cancer metastasizes. Once the cancer has spread, it is known as Metastatic Breast Cancer or Stage IV Breast Cancer. People living with MBC will be on treatment for the rest of their lives. As one treatment stops working, the next will be used. Currently there are only so many treatments available to those with MBC. The median life span for someone with MBC is only three years.
