Ottawa-Gatineau: Team Jean - CIBC Run for the Cure

Team Jean

I would like to dedicate this walk to Jean Seddon my biological mother. I was born out of wedlock and given up for adoption at an early age. I had little to no contact with her until my early 40s. Eventually Jean would reach me through one of those 'adoptive reunion registries'. Our conversations were short and awkward at first, with much pausing. As time passed, the conversations became more congenial. I would learn that she had moved to Australia shortly after I was born. She also mentioned at this time she had breast cancer, but it was in remission now. Over the next couple of years, we exchanged many emails, photos and mail. During this time, I started a conversation about coming down to Australia for a visit. My partner at this time was very encouraging, and Jean was indeed happy to receive us . As time passed, and as grown children will experience, those expectations with their parents demise. And so it was that we learned of my mother-in-law’s passing. Not totally unexpected but sadness and grief. Shortly after her death, came very unexpected news of Jeans passing. Her cancer had returned and was aggressive. I was quite upset by her passing. I was really looking forward to visiting her.
