In December my sister Sasha was diagnosed with breast cancer. While it’s a diagnoses many people face, it doesn’t make it any less challenging for those going through it.

In true Sasha style the last 9 months have been characterized by grace, kindness  and later on, several fabulous wigs. Being treated for cancer is a full time job, between chemotherapy, weekly blood draws and appointments, a double mastectomy, and the million other unpleasant things that come along with it. Through all of this Sasha’s commitment to her family, especially the thoughtful ways she managed the reality of diagnosis and treatment with her children, speaks to her determination to see her loved ones thrive even in the most difficult of circumstances.

One in eight women will experience breast cancer in their lifetime. On October 6th I will not only be running for Sasha, but also for my daughter Poppy, my niece Ruby, and for all our collective daughters. May they have the strength and resolve of my badass sister, but never have to call on it in the face of this awful disease.
