I never thought after walking over 78,947 steps every year (for over 5 years) in the fight against BREAST CANCER that I would need the very help that I walked to support.

2021…. I was turning 60, always very active, I was looking forward to spending time with my grands, continuing my 40 year nursing career and sharing an adventure to Africa with the love of my life. Early in the new year, I braved the Covid phone lines a booked a mammogram. Life continued, after a repeat mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy I continued to be optimistic. Saturday, March 13 Scott and I were enjoying a beautiful day at the lake planning our summer. The phone rang, my heart stopped and my life would change forever ! I would be diagnosed with Stage 1 aggressive and invasive ductal carcinoma. A referral to the Breast Care Clinic, a surgeon and an oncologist at the Cross Cancer Hospital.

I remember crying myself to sleep that night. Faced with many decisions and fear of the unknown. The most heartbreaking and difficult conversation would be telling my adult children.

The next 25 days were very intense. A partial mastectomy and sentinel node dissection. The pathology report received in record time was the greatest news ever. The cancer was contained an my lymph nodes were clear. There would be no chemotherapy only 15 radiation treatments ! 

2024….. I remain CANCER FREE !  Thank goodness for early detection, surgery and radiation. I am so grateful to be here sharing my journey !

During all those steps walking for those that could not.... there were many laughs, great stories, tears to cry, hope to share and familys to hug, many blisters to bandage and the promise to do it all over again year after year....  Kimm
