There is always hope.

To show my support for the pink sisters diagnosed with breast cancer every year, I am participating and fundraising for this year’s Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure.

As many know my story I was diagnosed and treated for triple negative breast cancer. I found a lump in October 2023 which sent me on a trajectory of surgery, chemo and radiation, a whirlwind that lasted 6 months. I am now in a stage of wait and see, which means I am crossing my fingers to be one of the lucky ones for the cancer to not return.

The question of "why" sits at the forefront when you are diagnosed. I found myself going through a checklist in my brain - what did I do wrong, what lifestyle choice should I have changed. When I asked the question to my surgeon, she simply shared I was just unlucky and female. I have processed that through treatment. Now I sit in a quiet fear of if or when it will return.

Through all this, I count myself as extremely lucky. I found the cancer early and I had exceptional treatment. My community of support has been bar none over the top incredible. Myself and my family were supported by a huge community filled with generosity and kindness. Their support gave me the space to go through treatment with the peace of mind my family had support too.

Cancer is not a fun journey - it turns one's life upside down. I view it as a twist in the road in my life journey. I am fortunate and am well aware that not everyone shares this fortune in a time of darkness.

Going forward I think of the future generations, I think of the young girls in my life and how I hope they never have to experience this. The research has supported targeted treatments and has made advances but there still is a lot to learn and more to do to stop this. Being diagnosed with cancer simply for being a woman is hard to hear and accept. Being diagnosed with any cancer is terrifying.

Fundraising for this event helps further the knowledge and treatment and maybe even one day will stop this from happening. I can't help but think of all the young women and how I would want to do all I could to try and stop them from experiencing this journey.
