After multiple surgeries, chemotherapy treatments, four blood transfusions and more, the nasty bastard “Eduardo” (an aggressive triple-negative breast cancer) has been removed from my friend, Denise. At one point, the poor woman had SIX drains sticking out of her. I didn’t know who to feel more for - Denise for having the drains or her husband, Darren, for helping Denise empty and measure the fluid collected in each drain. I had to help my sister with her single drain after her mastectomy and that was (insert barf emoji!!)  Even through all the physical, mental and emotional challenges, Denise was ready to crack a joke or share a smile. She is one badass Pink Warrior!!! This August, I finally met up with Denise again. It felt so nice to give her a hug! 

Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment has advanced significantly since my mom was diagnosed in 1992. Back then, I knew two people who had breast cancer: my friend’s mom (Hi, Jennifer!) and my mom. Now, I can probably name more than TWO DOZEN women who have been struck by this disease. To me, this is a good thing as it means that breast cancer detection has improved and more lives are saved. 

This year, I am running to honour those who helped my loved ones through their breast cancer battle. The doctors, nurses, various oncologists, psychiatrists, physiotherapists, support staff… You people are the true ROCK STARS!! Thank you for saving my mom, my sister, my cousins, my aunt, my friends, my colleagues, my neighbours, and so many more. I would like to say that every person I know who struggled with breast cancer is a survivor, but I can’t. Regardless, thank you for trying. 

Last year, my goal was to raise over $5000. I didn’t quite hit the target, but I am still very grateful for the support I received. Remember that every penny (well, nickel) counts and no donation is too small.
