I am fortunate enough to be a cancer survivor. I am alive and well because of the efforts of countless compassionate health-care workers over 20 years ago. While I am appreciative of their time and care, it was the love and support of my family that got me through the worst days of my treatment. 

It would be an understatement to say that my mom was crucial to my well-being during my treatment. She was my advocate in every appointment. She was running out to get me food in the middle of the night because of the changes in my diet due to medication. She was the one calling the movie theatre to get me an Ice Age poster to hang in my bedroom. She was the one trying to find me moments of normalcy in a childhood that was anything but. Like the efforts of most mothers, her extraordinary acts of care for everyone other than herself were not fully appreciated in the moment. 

Now, I have the opportunity to repay a fraction of that support, as my mom has been diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC), a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. My mom is the strongest person I know, and I have no doubt that she will fight this disease with the same tenacity and perseverance that she brings to everything she does. I am fundraising on behalf of my biggest supporter and all of the people whose lives have been affected by this terrible disease. 

My goal for this run is a lofty $2500, but it is a goal I want to achieve because it enables me to personally choose what the money will be used for. Since IBC is a rarer form of breast cancer, in need of more medical analysis, I want my fundraising money to go towards research to better understand this form of cancer.
