When I was diagnosed with breast cancer 19 years ago I found out I inherited a significant genetic risk of breast cancer. It explained all the cancer on my mom's side of the family. I have taken preventative steps to reduce my risk going forward and am leading an active life. Being introduced to breast cancer team dragon boating was the silver lining of my breast cancer diagnosis.

The most difficult part of this journey is knowing that my kids are faced with this inherited risk of breast cancer and that they carry this knowledge and the associated stress with them at a time in their lives when they should be focussed on friends, building careers and other young person priorities.

My biggest hope is that the funds raised by the Run For The Cure will fund research that helps find a way to prevent breast cancer, especially for those with high genetic risk of breast cancer.

Every day, 70 Canadians will hear the words “you have breast cancer.” While these Canadians are living longer, healthier lives after a breast cancer diagnosis, but there is still so much work to be done. 

By participating in this year’s Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure,  I’m joining a collective that is a force-for-life in the face of breast cancer. I’m running in honour of the incredible people in my life, and I need your help!
