When I was 2 years old my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, sadly she died when I was just 7. She left behind a husband and 7 children. My sister and I received annual mammograms as we got older. Fast forward 34 years.... it was July 2011, and I had my annual mammogram and once again I received an "all clear". September 2011, just 2 months later I found a lump while doing my monthly self check! This is why it is SO IMPORTANT to DO SELF CHECKS EVERY MONTH!! Over the next 4 years, surgery, chemo, radiation, a second diagnosis, surgery again, and chemo again, it was reluctantly decided that I would be tested for the BRCA gene. They were hesitant to do the test because I was 41 years old, and only 1 known relative with breast cancer. (The guidelines are 2 known relatives with breast cancer and under 40 years old.) I however pushed for the testing and 15 months later it was discovered that I am BRCA2 positive! I now know that the testing is much quicker than it was 10 years ago because both of my daughters were tested when they turned 18. One of my girls is negative and the other is positive. I feel optimistic in knowing that my daughter will be ok as I have witnessed firsthand the advances that have been made over the past 40 years. As a result of my BRCA diagnosis all my brothers, sister, and many nieces and nephews have been tested for the gene. I am so happy that I pushed to have the testing done because now my whole family is extra vigilant with their own health.

So, this is my takeaway from my experience:

1. Be your own advocate! If it doesn’t feel right, push for a change.

2. Do self checks every month! 3. Donate! The advances that have been made really have made a difference.

4. Appreciate life, family and friends! To show my support for all Canadians impacted by breast cancer, I am participating and fundraising for this year’s Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday, October 1, 2023.

With your help, I can reach my fundraising goal and make a life-changing difference for so many people. Every dollar I raise will fund groundbreaking breast cancer research and support programs and services for those impacted by this disease.
