My beautiful friend Marissa was diagnosed with breast cancer this past year. Notwithstanding how frightening, surreal and painful this has been for her, I have watched her deal with her diagnosis and subsequent treatment with overall positivity, grace, courage and even some humour. As lifelong friends, this doesn't surprise me at all; in true Marissa fashion, cancer will simply not stand a chance. My heart aches for her and yet I'm so proud of her. Cancer is tough, but Marissa is tougher.

I decided to participate in this run and dedicate it to her because when she can't run that fast, I'll run the extra mile for her. Always. Along the same lines, I know that when I need her the most, she'll be there for me.

Progress only happens through research. If you're able to, please donate. I'm told that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women. Insist on a yearly mammogram and additional screening and be vigilant about your health. Most of all, don't take the people you love for granted and no matter what, laugh lots, it's often the best medicine.
