As many of you already know, last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Receiving the news of having breast cancer was very difficult to receive but learning more about my full diagnosis once all the tests had been performed was devastating. I have stage IV, triple negative breast cancer that has metastasized from my breast to my lymph nodes and to my lungs.  

At stage IV, treatment is aimed at extending life rather than curing you from cancer. Hearing the doctor say that the average time a person has left with my diagnosis is a year and a half, broke me. 

It took me until I was almost 40 to find the love of my life. We didn’t have our two beautiful kids until I was almost 44 and just 9 years later, I had to tell my family that I may only have a few more months to be here with them.  

I wish every day that I wasn’t in this situation, and wish no one else would ever have to go through this either but we aren’t there yet. We don’t have a cure and treatments for triple negative breast cancer are limited. More research is needed, we need to do more to help detect earlier and women need support systems when dealing with breast cancer.

I am participating and fundraising for this year’s Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure. I don’t know that I will be able to run any of it but I will walk it one way or another.
