When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, it turned our world upside down. Watching her go through chemotherapy, radiation, and the emotional toll of the disease was incredibly difficult. I remember her losing her hair and how brave she was through it all, even though I knew she was struggling inside. Despite the physical and emotional pain, she faced every treatment with strength and determination. After months of fighting, she was declared cancer-free, and our family had a brief period of relief. However, the cancer returned and metastasized, forcing her to go through even more grueling treatments. 

When my mom’s cancer came back and spread, it was terrifying, but she stayed so strong. The treatments got tougher, and we didn’t know what to expect. Thankfully, with the help of CancerCare, her doctors, and ongoing research, she was able to join a program that offered a new kind of treatment. Unlike chemo, it didn't cause hair loss or make her as sick. She still has to go for treatments every three weeks, but it’s given us an extra 10 years with her so far, and we’re so grateful. Even though her life is filled with doctor’s visits and tests, she’s made the most of it—still traveling, spending time at the lake, and just enjoying being with family. Her strength through everything has been such an inspiration to all of us as she continues to fight this disease with grace and courage.

This is why I’m participating in the CIBC Run for the Cure—to support programs and services for those impacted by breast cancer. It’s a way to honor my mom’s strength and resilience, and to help ensure others can benefit from the same kinds of breakthroughs that have given us more time together.
