My battle with breast cancer started in October 2020. I found a lump above my left breast. I saw my family doctor soon after finding it, she requested an urgent mammogram appointment, followed by a biopsy. It was determined to be HER2 positive breast cancer within a month. I started chemo January 2021, then a double mastectomy in May. I continued my full year of maintenance chemo. During that year I was attempting to be back to my “normal” life when I found another lump in very close to the same location as the first. This time diagnosed as triple negative breast cancer. I started chemo again in January 2022 (groundhog year!) followed by radiation. Triple negative is a difficult diagnosis to receive however I’m approaching 3 years since the last tumour was removed. My chance of reoccurrence comes down dramatically after 3 years so I’m ready to celebrate! I feel great and incredibly optimistic that I’ve kicked cancer to the curb for good this time. 

I continue to push for more research around triple negative. My goal this year is to raise over $2500. If I am able to fundraise over $2500 I can choose where my fundraising dollars go. I choose “Research hard to treat cancers’. Here’s a bit of info to where your money would go..

Research - hard-to-treat cancers

On average, an estimated 78 Canadian women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day. Thanks to the tremendous work of researchers, the 5-year net survival for breast cancer for Canadian women is 89%. This means that about 89% of women diagnosed with breast cancer will survive for at least 5 years after their diagnosis.

But some types of breast cancer, like triple-negative breast cancer, can be harder to treat. 

Your support will fund critical research into hard-to-treat breast cancers and fund projects that could help treat cancer at an advanced stage.
