Every day 70 Canadians will hear the words "you have breast cancer".

For my family it was June 1, 2017 when my oldest daughter broke the heartbreaking news, she had breast cancer. Breanna was just 26 at the time of her diagnosis. Subsequently genetic testing revealed that she was carrying the BRAC-1 mutation. It is estimated that 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer, with the mutation that grows to nearly 9 in 10. Further testing in the family revealed that my wife, my youngest daughter, my wife’s sister, and her two daughters all tested positive for the BRAC-1 genetic mutation. Breanna fought hard after the diagnosis but lost her battle to the extremely aggressive cancer on May 6,2020 at the age of 29. Gone way to soon and way to young.

Although many Canadians are living longer, healthier lives after a breast cancer diagnosis, there is still so much work to be done.

By participating in this year’s Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure, I’m helping make a meaningful difference in the lives of Canadians affected by breast cancer. I’m running in honor of the six incredible women in my life affected directly by breast cancer or the BRAC-1 mutation and I need your support. They are my oldest daughter Breanna, my wife Helen, my youngest daughter Richelle, my sister in-law Monica, and her two daughters Erin and Arden.
