Every year 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with Breast Cancer….On August 25th, 2023 I was one of those women. 

 

Instantly I thought how, why me? And quickly I learned the following… You don’t need to be over 50 years, I was 39. You don’t need to have a family history of Breast Cancer, I have zero history. You don’t need to have an underlying health condition, I was completely healthy beforehand. You don’t need to live lifestyle choices that would contribute to cancer, I have never smoked, vaped, did drugs, and between three pregancies, breast feeding three babies, being tired from raising three babies, lol, I have rarely drank. You don’t need to have a genetic link, after having genetic testing done, I have no genetic markers linking me to breast cancer. Breast Cancer can happen to anyone! So check those breasts once a month for any changes. I was happily nursing our sweet Evelyn, when I felt what I thought was a clogged milk duct, turns out it was not. After some scans, biopsies and waiting for results, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

In October 2023, I began 24 weeks of chemotherapy and immunotherapy. In May of 2024, a week after turning 40, I underwent a mastectomy and axillary node dissection.  I am currently undergoing post surgery treatments and will also start 10 days of radiation in September. 

 

And more personally, I have prayed every day, that my daughters, who are too young to realize it,  but now have a family history of breast cancer, never walk this path like I have. 

But if for some reason they do, I hope that research and medicine keep advancing so they have the best fighting chance.
