Four months ago, my world started to change. My dermatologist called it “rapid onset autoimmune hair loss”. After most of my hair found refuge in the shower drain, I shaved my remaining locks and now sport a Sinead O’Conner, Annie Lennox, Furiosa inspired hairdo. But what was going on? I had my blood tested for just about everything. I had a physical with all the accoutrements (colonoscopy, pap, mammogram). That’s when a lump was discovered. After several mammograms, an ultrasound and a core biopsy it was determined that I have ductal breast cancer. I don’t know if the hair loss and breast cancer were linked … I think my immune system went glitchy. I have an appointment next week to help determine the path forward.
