Why am I running and volunteering?

• Three members of our immediate family (including me) have walked this cancer journey.
• Research has resulted in new treatment options that our family has benefited from – treatments not available even a few short years ago.
• My three daughters and granddaughters are now at higher risk of breast cancer because I’ve blazed the way.  But they are also now eligible for enhanced screening – early detection makes all the difference!

Seven years ago, I was busy packing up our house for a move when my Cancer Care Ontario mammogram reminder arrived in the mail.  It didn’t seem that important as all my previous mammogram results had been fine, however, I managed to fit that appointment into my hectic schedule.  And so began a crazy three months of settling into a new home and community, medical appointments, biopsy results, and breaking the news to my family, followed by double mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery.  My surgery recovery goal was to hold my baby’s first-born daughter.  So, seven days post-surgery I had the joy of holding three-day old sweet Everly in my arms (well supported by a cushion!).  My daughter wouldn’t allow anyone else to hold her until I did – what an incentive!
