I was diagnosed with breast cancer 17 months ago. Surgery, treatments, and many appointments with my various doctors took place during the following 4 months. I have just completed my first year (of 5) on medication to hopefully hold off the development of future tumours.

I was lucky my cancer could be operated on and treated so quickly and I have the many wonderful doctors, technicians, and support staff at Lakeridge Health for their amazing service with this. They, along with my supportive and loving family and friends supported me all the way. I was able to return to my teaching career and continue my life. 

Life has brought its share of challenges. Although I was able to work the past 10 months, the days were not always easy to get through. I look the same as I did before cancer invaded my body, but my body isn’t the same in many ways. The side effects from surgery and treatments still affect my body in huge ways. Being sore, moody, and exhausted all of the time is draining. But I know things happen for a reason and I’m a stronger person because of all of it. 

I’m participating for myself, all of my friends who have been diagnosed with the disease, and everyone who is fighting or has fought cancer. We are all in this together.
