Guelph: One Melon Helen - CIBC Run for the Cure

One Melon Helen

Hello, everyone! My name is Helen, and I am honored to share my journey with you as I take part in this cancer run. It has been a challenging road, but I am determined to turn my experience into something positive and help raise funds for an incredible cause.

My journey began in October 2020 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Looking back, I realize that this journey could have started earlier if a routine mammogram had been done in 2019. Unfortunately, the lump in my breast was initially mistaken for a cyst, and no further action was taken at the time. When I finally received the diagnosis, the cancer had already advanced significantly.

To combat the disease, I embarked on a rigorous treatment plan. I underwent six rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the tumor, making it suitable for a mastectomy. On March 30th, I underwent a mastectomy, where my right breast was removed. However, it was later discovered that the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes, necessitating a second surgery on May 4th to remove them as well.

Following the surgeries, I underwent 15 sessions of radiation therapy to target any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence. It was a crucial part of my treatment plan and required commitment and resilience, but I faced it with determination and hope.

When I first learned about the treatment plan, I had concerns about losing my hair and the potential nausea from chemotherapy. However, the anti-nausea medications I received were excellent, and I never experienced any vomiting or intense nausea. Though I did lose my hair in large clumps before my second round of chemotherapy, I made the decision, alongside my incredibly supportive husband, Brian, to embrace the bald look. We realized that being bald didn't define me or my strength.

During this challenging time, I also faced the emotional task of breaking the news to my family in England. However, with the unwavering support of my loving husband, Brian, and our daughters, Georgia and Erin, I found the courage to share my journey with them. They became pillars of strength, providing me with unconditional love and support throughout every step of this difficult process.

Georgia and Erin, my two remarkable daughters, were not only supportive but also instrumental in my healing journey. They encouraged me to explore activities like yoga and meditation, which helped me find solace and inner peace during the toughest moments. Their love and care infused me with the strength to keep pushing forward, even when things seemed overwhelming.

I truly believe that I could not have gone through this challenging journey without the unwavering support of my husband and daughters. Their love, encouragement, and willingness to be there for me through thick and thin have been a source of inspiration and hope.Together, as a united family, we faced the uncertainties, the fears, and the triumphs. They stood beside me, reminding me that I was not alone, and that I had an army of love surrounding me.
Throughout my journey, I've been fortunate to have an incredible network of friends and family rallying behind me. Their unwavering support has been a constant source of motivation and comfort. I am eternally grateful for their presence in my life.

When I first heard that I would be off work for a year, I was shocked. I wondered how I would fill my days, having been so accustomed to a busy work life. However, with the loving guidance of my family and friends, I soon discovered that this year could be an opportunity for self-care and personal growth. I immersed myself in activities like baking, exploring new recipes, word searches, and paint-by-numbers. A few months after surgery, I even found solace in gardening and going for walks, reconnecting with the simple joys of nature.

Now, as I stand before you, I am determined to give back and make a difference. Participating in this cancer run is not only a personal triumph but also an opportunity to raise funds for vital research, support programs, and initiatives that assist those fighting against cancer. Together, we can help provide hope, resources, and comfort to those in need.

I hope you will join me in this incredible endeavor, supporting me as I cross the finish line and proving that together, we are stronger than cancer. Your generosity and encouragement will make a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals, just like me, who are battling this disease.

Thank you for being a part of my journey, for standing by me, and for your unwavering support. Let's make a difference together!
