My name is Julie Lebert, also know as Dr Lebert or Dr Julie to most of my patients. I'm a medical oncologist who treats many of the breast cancer patients in my community.

In Aug 2022, at age 38, I had my first mammogram after noticing some breast tissue asymmetry. Calcifications in my right breast were found. I had a biopsy done which ended up being nondiagnostic. The findings weren’t overly concerning so we decided to repeat the mammogram in 6 months.

On Valentine’s Day 2023, I found out my follow-up mammogram was more concerning. More microcalcifications were found and this time the biopsy confirmed what I already knew - Ductal Carincoma in Situ. The findings were classic.

After a storm of emotions and panic and several calls to my various oncology and surgical colleagues, I elected to undergo skin and nipple sparing bilateral mastectomies with implant based reconstruction on March 14/23.

With the support of my husband, my 3 little boys, family, friends, colleagues and patients, I have come through this with greater perspective and gratitude, and an acute awareness of how things could've been very different had it not been caught this early.

This year, I am participating in Run for the Cure for the first time. I am not just running for myself, but for my breast cancer patients and all the women and men whose lives have been touched by breast cancer.
