As some of you know, my mom was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2011. Soon after she tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation. Women with this condition have a 57-60% risk of developing breast cancer and a 40-59% risk of developing ovarian cancer. After also testing positive for the BRCA1 gene I knew my chances were high for developing cancer as well. I was on a waiting list in hopes of getting a prophylactic double mastectomy, which essentially means they remove your breasts before you have a chance of getting cancer. Unfortunately, COVID delayed this non-emergency surgery.

In the meantime I was part of high risk screening programs that included annual mammograms and MRIs. But in August of 2020 (during a global pandemic, at 30 y/o) they found a lump during my second MRI which was later biopsied and it came back as stage 1, grade 3 triple negative breast cancer. After my double mastectomy with reconstruction on Sept. 25th and 12 rounds of chemotherapy I’m happy to say I have done everything I can to medically to reduce my chances of recurrence. 

I was extremely fortunate enough to have my cancer caught in the early stages that it had not travelled to my lymph nodes. 

I hope that sharing my story will help other young females be aware of changes in their bodies, their hereditary risks and can advocate for themselves.
