I am participating and fundraising for this year’s Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure. 

A year ago, my life took an unexpected turn. What started as a regular day quickly changed when I got the call that I had breast cancer. I was completely stunned and trying to wrap my head around what I’d just heard.

The weeks that followed were a blur of appointments, tests, and an avalanche of new information. It felt like I was constantly trying to keep up with a whirlwind of medical jargon and decisions. Each visit left me feeling more overwhelmed, struggling to find any clarity in the chaos. Fortunately, I had someone by my side who helped me stay grounded and manage my emotions.

Breaking the news to my family and friends was one of the hardest parts. Their shock and worry mirrored my own, and it broke my heart to see them upset. Thankfully, my friends and family were amazing during this time. Their messages of support reminded me that I wasn’t alone in this.

My treatment journey kicked off with chemotherapy, then a lumpectomy, followed by radiation. The side effects—mostly the fatigue and hair loss—were tough, but the emotional toll was even harder. There were days when everything felt too much, but there were also moments of unexpected joy and support that helped me push through.

One of the highlights was ringing the bell to mark the end of my radiation treatment. It felt like a huge milestone, a symbol of making it through a rough chapter and starting a new one.

Looking back on the past year, I am starting to see that recovery is a continual process, filled with regular check-ups and adjustments to a new normal. The fear and uncertainty haven’t completely gone away, but they’ve been softened by a deeper appreciation for life and the incredible support I’ve received.

Breast cancer definitely shook up my life, but it also taught me a lot about the power of relationships and the value of appreciating every moment. I wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone, but I’m thankful for the inner strength I’ve discovered and the amazing support I’ve had throughout it all.
