I’ve always been afraid of cancer, but for most of my life it was an intangible, distant fear. I vividly remember on the first day of my genetics course at university when the professor asked us to look to the right and to the left, and casually stated "1 of you 3 will have cancer in your lifetime." Although that statistic alone was enough to give me chills, I never anticipated that, at age 35, that fear would become real.

My world suddenly crumbled on May 25, 2023, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was in shock and absolutely terrified. I wanted to stay strong for my kids, but I was facing a beleaguered healthcare system that could not deliver quick access to tests and treatment that I so desperately needed. I was left to wait in limbo for 3 months before receiving treatment - for me this was the hardest part.

In my misfortune, I was dealt a hand of good luck. Immediately following my surgery, I was told I was in remission. This second chance at life is a debt I owe to my skilled surgeon and his amazing team at the Gatineau Hospital. To them I am forever grateful. I was so fortunate to also count with the support of my family and friends who were there for me all along - thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Like many survivors, I often feel uncertain about my future, and from time to time, fear creeps in. And still, I find strength knowing that modern medicine will continue to save lives, and that one day we WILL find a cure for cancer.   

On October 6, 2024, I will be running in solidarity with the thousands of Canadians diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Please join me in supporting this cause, not just for me but for everyone affected directly or indirectly by breast cancer.
