Every day, 70 Canadians will hear the words “you have breast cancer.” While these Canadians are living longer, healthier lives after a breast cancer diagnosis, there is still so much work to be done. 

By participating in this year’s Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure,  I’m helping make a meaningful difference in the lives of Canadians affected by breast cancer. I’m running in honour of the incredible people in my life, and I need your support! 

This is the 6th time I have participated CIBC run for the cure. I started the run in the 2016 when I completed all my breast cancer treatments. As a breast cancer survivor, I benefited the advance research in cancer treatment. I felt I need to do something to help. Although I trusted people are willing to give, I was shy to ask my friends for money. An idea to sell to raise fund came to me. Foraging and gardening are my hobbies. Getting free foods from the nature always gives me joy. Often, I picked too much to consume for our own family. I decided to raise money by selling the extras.

I developed a new hobby after we bought a home by the ocean, which is fishing. I was amazed by the fish caught just offshore. There are so many out there. Many people catch just for fun. I have learnt so many skills and made so many friends at the shore.  Over $7,000 was raised from selling the fish caught by me and my friends every year in the last three years. 

Commercial fishing for stripped bass is not permitted and the possession limit is 3 per person. With so many people in the team we can keep more fish to send away. Every time when friends came to visit they all left with coolers of fish to distribute.
