In 2021, I received news that shook me—I tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation that has affected generations of my family.

I always thought I was strong, but facing this reality was a different kind of challenge.

Every appointment was heart-wrenching. How could I, at 28 years old, be making some of the most significant decisions of my life? I felt lost, unable to share my fears with friends and family without breaking down.

Fast forward to June 19th, 2023, a date etched in my heart. I took a monumental step towards my future—a prophylactic double mastectomy with DIEP reconstruction. It felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders.

Having witnessed my mom and other loved ones battle breast and ovarian cancer, I knew I'd choose scars over cancer any day.I am beyond grateful for the availability of genetic testing, a lifeline that allowed me to take control of my health.

This year marks my second CIBC Run for the Cure, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported my fundraising journey thus far. Together, we can make a difference. Let's support breast cancer research and awareness. Every step brings us closer to a cancer-free future.
