Every day, 70 Canadians will hear the words “you have breast cancer" and on February 28, 2019, I was one of those Canadians, as I heard those exact words, "you have breast cancer". To be precise, I was diagnosed with bi-lateral breast cancer, one side was lobular invasive carcinomawith positive lymph node involvement and the other diagnosis was ductal carcinoma. As a wife and mother of 3 adult children, a sister, an aunt, a daughter-in-law, a sister-in-law, a friend, this is not what I wanted to hear. It had to be a nightmare. It wasn't. It was my....our...new reality. Numerous appointments with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, more surgeons not to mention lots of emotions, fear, and anxiety followed and not just for me.
In between all these surgeries and subsequent treatment, I continued to have numerous appointments with my incredible family doctor who would explain medical terms and procedures into layman's terms and who constantly re-assured me I could beat this. I had and continue to have appointments with my surgeon, my medical oncologist and my radiation oncologist, as well as my family doctor and other professionals. And now, I have a long-term treatment plan that hopefully, will eliminate my risk of breast cancer re-occurring ever again. I am one of the lucky ones. My prognosis is excellent, my disease, as I understand it, is curable. Why? Research. Funding. Brave women and men who have opted to be part of clinical studies. Compassion. Care. Experts.
Due to COVID 19, this year's mass organized runs across Canada have been re-imagined as Virtual Runs. So on October 4th, 2020, I plan on walking 5 kms. for the CIBC Run for the Cure, but will do so in my own neighbourhood. COVID 19 can not impact the need for research and a cure. The show must go on!
This will be my 8th year participating as a walker and Team Lead for our team. I know first-hand the need for research and the impact it makes in the lives of so many. Please consider donating to this very worthwhile cause. I know that together, we can change the future of breast cancer and make breast cancer beatable! Thanks in advance for your support!
